Challenges
- Initially, according to the primary plan, the shipment was requested to be transported as breakbulk due to its overwidth, as per the consignee's request to ship the commodity underdeck.
- The challenge was to find a cost-effective alternative for the consignee instead of the breakbulk option. We sought a carrier that could accept the cargo with dimensions exceeding the standard width of a 40' flatrack (5 meters wide, with an overheight of approximately 2.6 meters).
- After conducting several studies with the carrier, it was agreed that the shipment could be loaded onto a 40' out-of-gauge (OOG) flatrack.
- Another challenge arose when seeking approval from the carrier to load the shipment underdeck. This was challenging due to the double handling involved at transshipment ports.
- To ensure the under-deck positioning, we had to limit the maximum length of each unit to 11.4 meters, despite their actual length being 12 meters. This allowed for free corner castings on both sides of the flatrack, enabling it to be loaded as a flatrack instead of as breakbulk that would have incurred a shipping cost 3 X higher for the consignee.
- Finally The units were loaded onto the flatrack with utmost care and securely transported to the port using a flatbed trailer then were safely loaded underdeck inside the vessel, ensuring their safety throughout the journey. The shipment successfully reached its final destination of Maputo, resulting in complete customer satisfaction.
